The Daisy Chain

Sculpture by the Sea 2004

In 2004 Lola (age 9) entered and was accepted into the annual Bondi Sculpture by the Sea exhibition, “the world’s largest outdoor free-to-the-public exhibition of contemporary sculpture”, with the idea to create a daisy chain that ran the length of the walk. 1.4 km. 35,000 daisies. It was the efforts of many families and friends that eventually strung all the daisies together for the two week long exhibition.

To quote from Remo Giuffré’s 2014 book General Thinker:

The project involved hundreds of people and thousands of hours. It became a joyous local community endeavour. The experience taught Lola a valuable lesson, and reminded us all that a good idea is only part of the story. Execution is also crucial, and that execution usually involves a lot of effort from many people. To celebrate Lola’s Daisy Chain we produced a REMO T shirt which faithfully quotes words from her Artist’s Statement:

“I like daisy chains because you start with something little, and end up with something big.”
